It always turns out the same way: No matter what people might say, the beginning of an interest rate cycle always causes a change in command in the stock market. You must always change your mind, hold your nose, and buy what look to be some of the weakest names — the stocks that do best when rates go down, especially the housing-related stocks. In our case, that means Best Buy , Stanley Black & Decker and Home Depot . These Club stocks — beaten down, disliked, without sponsorship — go from being ugly ducklings to beautiful must-own swans. Best Buy is one of the most reviled stocks we have ever purchased. We bought our initial lot prematurely, on March 27, but as always we started small. That way the worst that happens is it shoots up higher and we kick it out for a small gain. In this case, the small buy was heavily justified as the stock fell like a rock thrown out of the Empire State Building. Surprised it didn’t hit somebody. Suffice it to say, we bought it all the way down and risked some serious derision, which we got. Some of it had to do with the old joke being that Best Buy was nothing but an Amazon showroom. I got two “thanks for putting me into the next Circuit City.” Hoo-hah! But I wasn’t just thinking of the rate cycle. The electronics retailer has several things going for it that couldn’t be beaten. First, we could be on the verge of the biggest PC refresh story since the Intel 386 migrated to the 486. Here’s why: The average PC refresh cycle is about three to four years, which is right now; the artificial intelligence PC is here and it’s very exciting; and Best Buy has 40% of the allocation of AI PCs, so they will be the go-to place for buy them. These aren’t your typical PCs and you will need instruction. Best Buy has the instructors. In addition, Best Buy has some pretty darned good management. CEO Corie Barry is a no-nonsense heavyweight who mastered the supply chain for Best Buy during the pandemic. She didn’t get any credit for it, but she did. When Barry came on “Mad Money,” she told a great story about the mounting momentum for the AI PC and how Best Buy had the biggest selection. She also dropped that 40% figure. I actually believed that the stock would go higher on the interview, but many of the pros don’t watch “Mad Money” or aren’t members of the Club. Or both. I have been out to see HP Inc , the maker of many of the AI PCs and I can tell you that you will want one even if you own a new PC. They just aren’t the same as the old ones in a very exciting way. I almost wanted to recommend HP, but it has that very tough printer division that is still bleeding and always will. The competition is just too fierce. Finally, there’s what happens when you have a good rate cycle. Right now the market is frozen. People don’t want to lose their low-rate mortgages. But people are beginning to anticipate mortgages that start with a 5 handle and that may be enough to get things going. If it is, people will begin to upgrade their homes, both buyers and the sellers. They have ample home equity loan capacity and they have held off buying appliances. As the JPMorgan recent upgrade on Best Buy said, most investors don’t realize how awful this period has been for Best Buy. Now it is over. And the appliances, big tickers with big margins, will start to sell. It doesn’t hurt, of course that Best Buy has a substantial dividend — 3.68%, down from 4% and 5% when we were buying it. Nor does it hurt that there are so few buys in the stock and there is a roughly 7% short position. We have seen retailers levitate, including Williams-Sonoma , Dick’s Sporting Goods and Abercrombie & Fitch . It’s Best Buy’s turn. The housing play Stanley Black & Decker is also one of the more reviled stocks out there. We waited until it was more than cut in half before we started buying it in June of 2023, but that was still too early. It traded down to the high $70s and we were there all the way. Why? Because when someone wants to sell a used house they need to fix things up. They can either hire a contractor, who more than likely will use DeWalt tools. Or they can do it themselves, which also means Stanley and Black & Decker tools. Why was this one so hated? There had been many mistakes by management during Covid and the Trump tariffs. Much of their stuff is made in China, and they handled the importing in a clumsy way. And they had some very squishy quarters. Like Best Buy, you had to hold your nose and just keep buying because of your conviction in the coming rate cycle, not the company. Fortunately, the company actually disposed of a business and fixed its weak balance sheet and made sure it could pay for its fairly hefty dividend. What’s amazing is that there are almost no buys on this one. Just an agglomeration of holds and sells on Wall Street. That makes it so you have to stay long, even after a spectacular gain. I never believe in sitting back and relaxing, but this one could have some mileage ahead as it used to be twice as high so analysts can always upgrade and say they missed nothing. I can’t say you ain’t seen nothing yet. I can say it is a pretty obvious play now that the rate cycle has begun. Home Depot is the easiest case of the three, the home improvement retailer has been biding its time until the buyers started going nuts. That’s because of how visible Home Depot is as a time-honored coiled spring now that estimates are low and it’s the place to buy tools, appliances, paint and whatever else is needed to fix up a house before you sell it. We picked Home Depot over Lowe’s because that you want to have the chain with the bigger percentage of professionals. I envision homebuilders flocking to Home Depot and its new division SRS, which Home Depot recently purchased and competes with Builders First Source for the professional for all sorts of home-related building materials. Lowe’s just isn’t complete enough. I don’t like to conflate money with deadly storms, but Hurricane Helene has wiped out a lot of houses, and homeowners have insurance. That means some very big orders are coming Home Depot’s way. This one just keeps rolling. Consumer staples struggle, industrials shine It’s difficult to understate how bad a positive rate cycle change can be for the recession-resistant stocks, especially the consumer packaged goods names. You know we have cut back our Procter & Gamble position drastically because you shouldn’t own any of these right now. Plus, P & G blew the quarter because of some bogus Chinese investigation into their business. We got bailed out by uninformed buyers who wanted to bet against a soft landing. And we could be further bailed out by the ridiculous Chinese stimulus plans. Oh, you say this time is different? It is always different and yet it always ends up in the same place: no dice. Without a direct infusion of capital into the hands of buyers, like a down payment for a home, these stocks are all window dressing. Nevertheless, the serial liars that run that country will make up some GDP numbers and suck more people in. As always, if you want to trade there — investing is impossible — buy Alibaba . It’s actually worth something. Procter & Gamble will most likely stall here. Why not sell it all? Because it’s just a placeholder and it doesn’t bother me. It can’t hurt us. Now how about our industrials? They are fulfilling their roles. We have watched Eaton and Dover go higher and that was without the rate cycle, just with the data center. Linde is outperforming because it has so many different non-cyclical components — medical, carbon capture, helium. It has had virtually no volume growth though. That will come with the lower rates so, strangely, it is early as a cyclical even if it is late as a secular grower. The one I am most angry about is Honeywell, which is just simply rangebound because new management, if you can still call them new, has been overpromising and underdelivering. It has plenty of cash and borrowing capacity but it just fritters away waiting for who knows what. I loved the way when the stock blew up after the last quarter they immediately floated that they might sell their Quantum Computing division. It’s hubris to even call it a division, though. How about an initiative? I figure that even as professional investors know that there’s really no there there, the retail investor will go nuts for a quantum computing chit in the big game. How cynical can these guys be? Why hold it? Because someone might come to their senses there and realize that having a stock range bound is not a victory. Tech troubles Tech seems like the biggest quandary. Why do you need a tech when you can go with an industrial or a housing-related company? Simple. Because the textbook never said don’t own techs. Only the consumer packaged goods stocks and the drugs are off the table right now. Our techs have their own stories. Broadcom is one quarter away from the next big step function of earnings. If you don’t believe me, go back and listen to my interview with CEO Hock Tan in San Francisco. We had an earnings breakout in VMWare, but we didn’t get the blowout in PCs or cellphones and somehow, there were actually people let down by the gigantic AI numbers, which are only going to get better. Remember, we want to avoid companies right now that have slight beats, not ones that can have big beats — even if they are in tech. Broadcom will have the kind of beat that people could go crazy for. I know we sold some Meta , but that was to avoid being bacon. When you have a company that can have a hit like these Ray-Bans with artificial intelligence and a camera and it doesn’t even matter, well that’s saying something in itself. I am troubled by Alphabet , so we let some go. But not as troubled after seeing its Waymo business in action. And I know that as exciting as Elon Musk will be whenever he blathers on about self-driving cars, Waymo’s vehicles are already racking up the miles to make it so they are the real deal. Salesforce is about to go from an enterprise software dud to a company like ServiceNow that actually has a legitimate product levered to AI in Agentforce. This unique product takes advantage of generative AI and can simulate an individual without the weariness and suppressed anger of the real deal. Trust me when I say that instead of screaming, “Will you please put a human on the line?” you will be begging for the agent. Client companies are more excited about this product than anything CEO Marc Benioff has ever unveiled. Apple ? I don’t want to get on my soapbox too often about this, but these services that purport to tell you how the new iPhones are selling? They have been systemic failures and have gotten more people to sell this stock than just about any source of information, including downgrades. They are shameless and they are never called out on their fallacies. There is no research jail, or they would be in it. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said sales on the iPhone 16 are very strong. But because we had this news on “Mad Money” and shared it with the Club, it just didn’t matter. Who are these people to ignore this news? The same people who don’t know an apple from an apricot. Is the multiple too high? Not if the predictable earnings stream keeps growing. And I think it will. Which brings me to the last and most difficult story: Nvidia . It is true that the chipmaker missed the whisper. But what matters isn’t that it missed, it’s why it missed. It wasn’t demand. It was supply. The yield, how many chips actually were manufactured to spec versus how many that had to be thrown away was way too low. Blackwell is extraordinarily hard to make. Nvidia still doesn’t seem to be shipping in volume. To which I say: Good. This stock will not be able to roar until we get all of the gunners, the day traders, the memesters out of it. I figure another month of this torture — or a breakdown below $200 — will do the trick. If you can’t handle that kind of decline, by all means exit and try to get back in lower. I can’t. 6 things from my San Francisco trip reveal which stocks are AI winners

It’s time for some of my reflections on a week in San Francisco talking to dozens of executives and workers in tech. It was a grueling trip, but a necessary one, because we are at a pivotal time when it comes to the revolution of artificial intelligence and accelerated computing. AI gets talked about a lot as it’s considered something that all companies have to be thinking about. Accelerated computing makes generative AI possible — and yet, it gets very little attention. There is no debate about AI. It must be implemented, in some form, by every company. But there is a debate about how it should be done. Do you use Microsoft ‘s Copilot AI assistant to interrogate your data? Do you have to build your own model on premises? Or can you just settle for using a cloud version and hire different vendors to interpret your data to make your company better at what it does — make it more productive and valuable to other companies? Club portfolio company Microsoft, right now, is considered the dominant AI force — and when combined with ChatGPT, it is the default choice for companies to work with in some way to be sure they are taking advantage of what AI has to offer. What is it that AI really has to offer? I have to tell you that after my trip I come back with more questions than answers about what it can do for anyone and anything. I know from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who had a terrific fireside chat with Marc Benioff, CEO of Club holding Salesforce , that many companies still don’t know what to do with the lightning speed of accelerated computing or the platform that Club name Nvidia is developing for any company that can afford it. Here are the six themes that I see at play. 1. Biggest bets Companies need to train their devices, giving them the data they need and the ability to access it correctly in some coherent form. Then it can be used to answer questions without the help of computer scientists. I have yet to hear anyone give a specific use case that they are using right now that’s seems really helpful except Amazon , Alphabet , Microsoft, and Meta Platforms (all portfolio stocks), and now Oracle . Almost everyone else seems to want to deploy AI in some meaningful way but don’t seem to know how. That’s why you can still own Nvidia, which is the brain behind pretty much everything, and the hyperscalers, or tech titans, which know how to use it. Meta Platforms can get you the right ads, designed by them, that will make it hard to consider advertising with anyone else — except maybe Google and Amazon. Microsoft’s Copilot lets you access data easily. It’s available on HP ‘s AI personal computers right now but hasn’t really attracted a lot of interest yet — good for Club company Best Buy ‘s forward earnings. Advanced Micro Devices , also a portfolio stock, makes a lot of the chips for the AI PC, again a terrific reason to own that stock of AMD. Alphabet uses it for Waymo, which finally seems to be ready for primetime . Waymo is teaming up with Uber to go into Atlanta and Austin, Texas. The tie-up is great for both. But make no mistake about it, Waymo is the brains of the outfit. We took Waymo self-driving cars everywhere in San Francisco — and after our second one, I didn’t want to go back to a human drive. The future is now when it comes to driverless vehicles, and I have seen the use case for Alphabet that makes me want to hold on to it — at last. Amazon’s always been a user of AI and the company is brilliant and inferring what you need. Amazon is a pure winner. 2. Bots and robots Everyone else? It’s just not clear, until what I saw at Dreamforce, Salesforce’s annual showcase event, something that makes me really excited about AI. It will be practical and very big. At Dreamforce, Benioff revealed the first truly useful initiative that will make it so companies can interact with customers in a seamless and intelligence way using artificial intelligence: Agentforce. Benioff’s brilliant keynote was all about how disappointing AI has been and how companies have spent billions on AI and have nothing to show for it. We keep hearing that the obvious use case, the replacement of the call center will be tremendous. That said, no one seems to have done anything with it that is different from what’s currently being done. Salesforce is going to change all that. Benioff unveiled Agentforce, a program takes all the data a company has, trains the chips with them, and then unleashes them as agents who know pretty much everything about every account and what questions that account’s customers might ask. The use case we saw was how Saks Fifth Avenue uses Agentforce to handle any question you might have about the luxury retailer and what it has for you. That’s a good start. But what Benioff envisions is a wholesale takeover of the entire selling and information process a company may want. The supposition is simple: We all know that an agent, which is really a bot, can be programmed to answer everything that you might need when you call. The agent learns more every day as the data is refreshed and just keeps getting smarter and smarter. From what I have seen and learned last week, in a very short period of time, is the customer will want an agent over a human. We are about to be blown away about how much smarter, more patient and more intuitive agents are then people. There was a time when you could call a company and speak to a human. But humans got too expensive so we dispensed with them and companies seem to have gotten to the point where they don’t want you to call at all. So they give you the press one, press two runaround. That all ends with Agentforce. We are going to go back to the way we were, and you can speak to someone better than a human. It is the true use case of AI because it will make your company so much better and more lucrative. I can see every retailer of any size, any company that has interaction with clients or potential clients, will be at a huge advantage. I’d say unless you were at the keynote you might not realize how potent this will be. For some companies, companies like CVS , this is a no brainer. It will work for any company that has regular questions from customers, like insurance and banks. I found all of this quite exciting, and the first real commercial homerun that will come from current AI. That’s the good news. The bad news? I didn’t see anyone else with a startling use case. Instead, everything seemed incremental in its opportunity. You did get the sense that lots of money is, indeed being thrown away on AI baubles, which may or may not payoff. I did feel that artificial intelligence is best left to the pros — and that, again, means the hyperscalers. The only admitted oddity that worked: the digital twin that can help Siemens build huge factories with the changes made on a small-scale model to save time and trim waste. I don’t mean to say that nothing will come of AI. Lots of smart people are trying to figure it out. Anything done by rote in any white-collar job will be eventually taken over by AI. But it’s a little like driverless cars: People aren’t sure yet if it can be trusted. We all have had too many bad experiences with Gemini or Claude or ChatGPT or Meta AI to trust it yet. That said, if I had an opportunity to speak to an agent in the health care chain I would gladly take that opportunity as these places just can’t staff all the people needed. What people really want is a robot that can do things specifically for them. One that can build things or get things or just give you a cup of your coffee. We want robots to handle almost all interaction with customers at restaurants or places like Club name Starbucks , wherever individuals are overwhelmed and miserable. I think these things are close by. As are bartenders who make great drinks but don’t talk much to you. We want robots to man warehouses. We want robots to handle logistics. I don’t know what will happen to people who are doing this now. I do know that they should be looking soon for other jobs as there are too many companies working on these use cases to think that there won’t be success. 3. Revered and reviled Who will make the robots? The presumption is that they will be made by Tesla — and that’s one of the big reasons why CEO Elon Musk might be buying so many Nvidia chips. Musk, by the way, is almost universally hated by everyone I talked to, a kind of virulent Donald Trump that can’t be avoided — a necessary evil. Who else is considered to be contemptible? Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who seems to be a loose cannon par excellence. He is considered to be the principal risk to the U.S. government from the CHIPS and Science Act, someone who might not be able to do half of the things he says he can do. People were incredulous about the idea that Qualcomm might want to buy Intel. Qualcomm is, historically, very anti-fab, that is against the in-house fabrication or manufacturing of chips. Gelsinger has be the biggest bettor on fabs imaginable. Intel is a very distant third to AMD in graphics processing units (GPU), and Arm Holdings is gunning to replace any Intel central processing units (CPUs) that AMD or Nvidia can’t replace. Intel’s Mobileye business has been run into the ground — and, despite attempts to make it seem otherwise, there are no takers for the starved Altera, Intel’s company that makes integrated circuits that can be programed after they’re make. I just don’t see what Qualcomm gets from an Intel deal. On the other hand, AMD chief Lisa Su is revered as a competitor and has produced CPU chips that can take over in personal computers and servers as well as GPU chips that can power artificial intelligence. But AMD is nowhere near the power or speed of those made by Jensen who like Su is widely respected. 4. Enterprise software I did hear, as I expected, a revulsion toward enterprise software where there are just too many companies trying to offer products that will make your company more productive and accountable and more efficient. I can’t tell if people are just tired of hearing about these companies or that they feel they have spent too much on them or if they can be done by in-house AI? There are so many multimillion-dollar programs helped by AI, which are being sold right now. I think that companies are too scared not to take them. It seemed almost bogus to me, but I don’t run an IT department or a finance department or an on-boarding department or a sales department. So maybe it is just lost on me. 5. Power problems What wasn’t lost on me was the omnipresence of Jensen and Nvidia’s Blackwell chip platform, the one that burns so hot that you need a huge amount of power to cool off the data centers, hence the love for electric companies Constellation Energy and Vistra , hence the hope for anything nuclear and for large scale natural gas turbines, the bailiwick of GE Vernova, one I wish we had but I underestimated the need for so much power. That was not very smart as I heard it again and again from Jensen. At least, we have industrials Eaton and Dover , two companies integral in the process of cooling. Those are good stocks. The long knives are out for Jensen after he did not blow away the last quarter. I think that was entirely a problem with the making of Blackwell — their complexity makes it so the yield is too low. There are lots of grumblings about how much Jensen charges — but if you can find something that does more for less, I say knock yourself out. Nvidia’s no lock. It’s attracted way too much hot money, and I sense that it still hasn’t been shaken out. 6. What slowdown Compare that, say, to Apple , where it seems like there’s no hot money in it at all so anything good you hear seems to still get reflected in the stock, even as people were fooled once again by analysts who tell you things aren’t great. I know that I pressed T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert, which might end up being the largest seller of the new iPhone, and he could have easily said that things were as good as last year. He didn’t. He said that things were much better . Bottom line The biggest winners I heard were AMD, Nvidia, Apple and Salesforce. I didn’t get much good from other enterprise software. While this is a pivotal time for tech because of AI, I think that we must all take a step back and kind of agree with Benioff’s view that AI isn’t being used effectively to streamline or advance the ball at least right now. We ranked the latest earnings reports from 30 portfolio stocks from great to ugly

It was a solid quarter for the companies in our stock portfolio, with the bulk of our names reporting what we felt were good-to-great earnings reports. Continued economic growth on the back of a resilient consumer and increasing business confidence ahead of what most expect to be a lower interest rate environment helped drive the results. Our companies’ performances were reflective of the S & P 500 firms in aggregate: 81% of technology companies beat sales estimates for the second quarter, followed by health care 79% and financials 61%, according to FactSet data. Health care at 87% and industrials at 82% were sector leaders in bottom-line beats. Methodology With the latest earnings season largely in the rearview, these second-quarter report cards are not the end-all, be-all for analysis. After all, we’ve only got about two weeks left in the third quarter. Nonetheless, we believe stock prices ultimately follow the underlying business fundamentals of companies. So, having an idea of which companies did well and which ones did not can help when thinking about which stocks to pick first in a pullback or let go of in a broad-based rally. With the latest earnings season largely in the rearview, these second-quarter report cards are not the end-all, be-all for analysis. After all, we’ve only got about two weeks left in the third quarter. Nonetheless, we believe stock prices ultimately follow the underlying business fundamentals of companies. So, having an idea of which companies did well and which ones did not can help when thinking about which stocks to pick first in a pullback or let go of in a broad-based rally. Similar to prior quarters, we grouped company results into one of four categories. The companies in each category are listed in alphabetical order. The Great The Good The Not So Bad The Ugly Home Depot is not listed below because we did not own the name before the company’s earnings release. With the Fed widely expected to cut interest rates at its upcoming September meeting, we opted to initiate a position in Home Depot to increase our exposure to quality companies that have been held down in this high interest rate environment but will see their industries improve as rates come down. Costco is also not included as the company has yet to report results. We will circle back and add Costco when the numbers are out toward the end of the month. Here is our ranking of earnings from 30 out of our 32 companies. The Great Apple : Despite all the worries about China, the consumer tech giant hit back with beats on the top and bottom lines. Equally important, total revenue guidance and management’s services growth forecast for the current quarter outpaced expectations. Advanced Micro Devices : In addition to exceeding expectations for both sales and earnings, management provided a positive outlook for the current quarter and sounded upbeat about AI chip demand. While MI300 chip supply continues to improve, CEO Lisa Su noted her expectation for supply to remain tight through 2025. On the PC front, she continues to think that new AI-enabled PC along with general refresh demand given how far removed we are from the last refresh cycle, during Covid, will result in strong demand for the company’s new “Zen 5” processors. Best Buy : Strong execution resulted in a top and bottom line beat versus expectations while the promise of wider adoption of AI devices and PCs as well as upcoming lower interest rates provided management the opportunity to raise full year guidance. Salesforce : The enterprise software giant beat sales and earnings expectations in the second quarter. The company may have maintained its full-year revenue outlook, but that was taken as good enough after last quarter’s debacle. Plus, an increase to its margin forecast showed Salesforce remains committed to profitable growth. DuPont : It was another beat-and-raise quarter , continuing a recovery partly driven by growing demand for AI chips — and rewarding our patience with the stock. DuPont has turned the corner, and now it is hitting full stride on its recovery. Danaher : The life sciences company delivered a strong quarter and reaffirmed its guidance — signaling the longtime Club stock is back on track. This quarter was exactly what we needed to see. In addition to strong performance at the companywide level — with profit margins and cash flow generation complementing the strength in sales and earnings — bioprocessing demand is improving as end-market inventory and funding continue to normalize. Dover : The company delivered better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and raised its full-year guidance — an all-around strong report that validates our decision to take a stake in the industrial name two months ago. Eaton : The momentum on display in Eaton’s quarterly results and in management’s outlook is showing no signs of slowing down. Segment profit margin and organic sales growth topped estimates. Management also raised its outlook for the year. In addition to industrial applications, both Eaton and Dover are beneficiaries of the AI-driven data center buildouts for the parts and systems they make. Eli Lilly : It was a home-run quarter fueled by sales of its blockbuster obesity and diabetes drugs, quieting any lingering investor concerns in the stock. Eli Lilly not only crushed estimates on all the most important items — profits and sales of diabetes treatment Mounjaro and weight loss drug Zepbound — but the company also hiked its full-year guidance for revenue, earnings and gross margin. Meta Platforms : Management delivered better than expected quarterly results, delivering revenue at the high end of guidance thanks to a roughly 22% increase in advertising dollars. While there are still concerns about the company’s aggressive AI spending, we believe these investments will pay off in the long run. Nvidia : The results , the guide and everything we heard on the call served only to increase our conviction that Nvidia really is the greatest semiconductor company in the world at the heart or the accelerated computing megatrend. Palo Alto Networks : Quarterly results were strong, and all signs point to continued growth ahead. While product sales performance did come up a bit light, the weakness was more than offset by strength in the company’s subscription and support offerings. Companywide gross income and operating income were all ahead of expectations. Management also provided a better-than-expected sales, earnings, and recurring revenue outlook. Stanley Black & Decker : Delivered solid quarterly results — enhanced by strong cash flow performance, allowing management to raise its full-year guidance. Like Best Buy, Stanley is a stock that will benefit from lower borrowing costs. The Good Abbott Laboratories : Sales, earnings and organic growth all exceeded analyst estimates. Unfortunately, that was overshadowed by softer than expected guidance for the current quarter. That said, we think management’s upward revision to the full year forecast, for both organic revenue growth and earnings are where investors should focus. Broadcom : Sales and earnings outpaced expectations , driven by strong sales of its AI products and VMware software. But management’s guidance for the current quarter disappointed investors, keeping this from being an outright great quarter. Disney : Concerns about attendance at its theme parks overshadowed streaming profits and better-than-expected headline results . However, the quarter checked the boxes that matter most to us. Alphabet : Delivered largely better-than expected earnings results that showed the search and cloud giant is finally on better footing in the fast-growing AI space. Linde : It was another impressive quarter , as the industrial gas supplier continues to demonstrate its reliability and value in a diversified stock portfolio. Morgan Stanley : It was a pretty strong quarter overall. In addition to the revenue and earnings beats, Morgan Stanley put up better-than-expected results on nearly all key firmwide metrics. Unfortunately, results came up short in both the Wealth Management and Investment Management segments. Microsoft : In addition to fiscal Q4 sales and earnings outpacing expectations, gross, operating, and net profit margins were all better than expected at the companywide level. Operating profitability was stronger than expected in all three main operating segments. Cash flow generation was also much more than expected despite slightly higher-than-expected operating expenses and capital expenditures to support the company’s cloud and artificial intelligence offerings. The one major miss was at Azure, which is the one unit investors are hyper-focused on and prevents us from calling it a great quarter. Nextracker : A roughly $100 million revenue beat and healthy profits per share were not enough to satisfy investors as scrutiny of the solar company’s revenue backlog came more into focus during Nextracker’s conference call with analysts. It seems to be the overarching concern around the quarter. Starbucks : The quarter wasn’t a great one, but expectations were low after the previous quarter, a debacle that led to a 16% plunge the next day. The two most important things Starbucks needed to do this time were show signs of improvement in North America and maintain its outlook. It delivered on both with slightly better sales and small margin compression in its largest region, while the full-year outlook was reiterated. Constellation Brands : Reported an earnings beat driven by strength in its beer business. However, investors — including us — remain troubled by continued weakness in the wines and spirits business. TJX Companies : The company’s ever-increasing ability to attract deal-hungry shoppers was on display , with a 4% increase in quarterly comparable store sales entirely driven by more purchases rather than higher prices. TJX is pairing that flourishing customer appeal with its well-oiled corporate operations, enabling the company to deliver the financial results that investors have come to expect. The Not So Bad Amazon : Quarterly results were mixed as sales came up short. Nonetheless, Amazon Web Services delivered great results, hitting a $105 billion revenue run rate and with operating margins that continued to trend higher despite heavy investment to keep up with demand. On the other hand, there were misses across its e-commerce and associated businesses. We could live with that but what kept this from being a good quarter was that in addition to the mixed results, guidance for the current quarter came up short. Coterra Energy : Sales and earnings came up short , however, production volumes and more importantly cash generation both came in ahead of expectations. In addition to the strong production and strict capital expenditures discipline, management raised their production outlook and discretionary cash flow target for the remainder of the year. GE Healthcare : It was not the best showing from GEHC. China was a key source of weakness in the quarter, and the primary factor forcing management to downwardly revise its full-year organic growth outlook. Honeywell : Strong second-quarter results were overshadowed by a mixed update to management’s outlook for the remainder of the year. But we’re looking through the weakness on a belief that the industrial conglomerate is heading toward a healthy 2025. Wells Fargo : The bank reported a beat on earnings but delivered softer guidance due to the uncertain economy and interest-rate environment. The Ugly Procter & Gamble : It was a messy quarter , which could give fuel to investors worried that a deterioration in the consumer would make its guidance harder to achieve.
